And then after we launched this product, everyone’s like, “Yeah, your prepaid debit cards are cool and all, but your expense reports are amazing.” And up until that point, I actually hadn’t intended to build it. I was just, it was a fake product that I was just making up as I went along. Expensify is an app that turns the cumbersome process of collecting expense documents and inputting data into a seamless transfer. By combining a mobile app with an intuitive cloud- based desktop program, Expensify allows you to easily manage and access your expense reports from anywhere there’s an internet connection. The product is further streamlined by removing the most inefficient part of any expense report — gathering data. Yeah, slowly die at scale, I guess, or something like that. But one thing we’re finding that’s very unusual about our business model, and so in the past couple of years, we spent a lot of time making the product easier for smaller business.
With regards to this, the fundamental changes taking place in the marketplace and the market players that are looking for new ways to drive growth are studied in the report. Over the weekend I found out that Expensify, a service I use for my company, outsources a feature to Amazon’s Mechanical Turk service. Expensify handles the management of business expenses, which for a company like ours can be problematic as we do a lot of travel when deploying services.
• Assessment of the market share for the country and regional level segments. • The report predicts the market trends and other factors indicating growth of the market. You read that right – the musical will take place live in New York City on Sunday , and it will not air during the game. Despite limitations in acquiring software, Microsoft Windows is still the most common operating system running on Cuban computers. An attempt was made to create a Cuba focused Linux-based distro called Nova. I was told that they even experimented with making it look as close to Windows 7 as possible, but people were still tied to using Windows. According to Wikipedia this distro is no more, which is a shame.
- When people talk about free software, they tend to focus on the “help your neighbor” aspect of it, and this was more the focus of Cubaconf than simply creating new code.

What pisses me off the most is this condescending Silicon Valley speak that their lack of transparency is somehow our fault. When Ryan Schaffer posted on Quora that nothing personal is included on receipts, he demonstrated a tremendous lack of understanding about something on which he should be an expert. As they turn this new leaf and try to be more transparent, I noticed he deleted his answer from the Quora question. But, some genius there decided that the best way for certain customers to insure their receipts were truly private was to have them use the Mechanical Turk with their own staff. I covered that in my first post and it is so complex it hardly registers as a solution. I recently posted a rant on how a vendor we use, Expensify, appeared to be exposing confidential data to workers with the Amazon Mechanical Turk service. In response to the general outcry, they posted a detailed explanation on their blog.
Access is controlled by an agency called ETESCA. To access the Internet you purchase a card which offers a certain number of hours of use, and then you have to locate an area with a wi-fi hotspot .

However, it can be useful to separate those who look at FLOSS as simply a development methodology from those who view it as a social movement. When companies like Microsoft and Facebook publish open source software, they are simply looking to gain value for their business that such sharing can create. When people talk about free software, they tend to focus on the “help your neighbor” aspect of it, and this was more the focus of Cubaconf than simply creating new code.
He did a great job, even though he had only a short time to understand the slides. After the keynote, we broke up into individual sessions. I went to one called “How to Make Money with Free Software” presented by Valessio Brito from Brazil.

In short, all you donate is your time, sweat, and willingness to help others. TR will offset mileage and/or flights, lodging, food and drinks during your expensify t shirt deployment. TR will also provide the necessary equipment and supplies, but asks that volunteers bring their own personal gear. I’m not going to get into those numbers in detail, but yeah, I would say like the nice thing is I think that accelerating at this scale, turning the ship around at this scale is real hard to do.
Well, origin stories are always complicated and I would say to summarize mine, initially I had no interest in expense reports whatsoever. I was doing something just completely different in the prepaid debit card space. And so I’m like, “All right, I need to do something low risk. I need to do something boring.” I’m like, “What is the most boring thing I can think of?
So we’ve got more companies as Expensify than the next four expense reporting companies. They’re the person who pulls us into the organization and then promotes us to the top of the organization. Barrett also says the company slowed down in the past because they “got distracted by the enterprise.” Expensify changed the product to make it easier for smaller businesses to operate. “The real opportunity is mid-market and below. And so we’ve been reorienting the company around mid-market companies and SMB and as we do that, we are actually seeing our revenue really accelerate, which has been great,” he says. Reimburse candidates automatically with expense reports that don’t suck!
Members are selected based on the proximity, availability, and personal readiness of our badass volunteers. Yes, Team Rubicon requires Greyshirts to have health insurance given the inherently dangerous nature of disaster response operations. All operations , projects, and training events require our members to maintain coverage in the event of personal injury. In order to take care of others on their worst day, our members need to take care of themselves first. If you are covered by VA Health Benefits, you’re covered and can still deploy. Let’s talk, and the reason I’m bringing that up is because our friend, Matt, right? Matt was on the show with TSheets, he just sold ti Infusions… Or sorry, to Intuit for 340 million bucks on a great multiple.
They define themselves as a “collective of technological , social and creative experimentation” and FLOSS plays a large role in their mission. It seems that Mr. Schaffer may limit his business expenses to the occasional coffee at Starbucks, but for the rest of us it is rarely that limited.
The user would take a photo and it would come back with a description that would be read aloud. You could get widely varying levels of detail from photos what are retained earnings of the same scene like “a purse and bag on a table” vs “a brown leather purse and a green bag of decaffeinated coffee on a dark wood table”.

For each night of the conference there was an event, and the one for Tuesday was held at a modern art gallery on the southern side of Old Havana. There was lots of food and drink, and I got exposed to a project called cuban.engineer. This is a group to promote technology careers within Cuba, and I had seen their shirts at the conference. • Watch designated videos on Taylor’s fan site. • Sign up for Taylor’s official mailing list. • Refer friends to the program with a link.
Everyone is in such a rush to deploy solutions that they just don’t think about security. Look what I was able to find out with just a discarded boarding pass – receipts can have much more information. And this is from a company that is supposed to be focused on dealing with expenses. This long-winded defense of the Turk seems like they are protesting too much.
Expensify is one of the more well known B2B SaaS products in the world, and for a team of 130 people it punches well above its weight. Ferriss, Business development and strategic partnerships at Expensify takes Nick and Dan through how he got into the SaaS world and why he’s loving it at Expensify. I don’t understand a bit of this thread other than there are apps to scan your receipts to them. Carnegie Mellon had a web site for what it called the ESP Game. Paired players would look at the same image and type a brief description. Points were scored when both players typed the same description. There was also graphics based game where the players had to highlight a portion of the image based on, often vague, descriptions.
Sorry, there’s no commission sales component at Expensify, so no one’s paid a commission at all, but we certainly have a support team that stands by because it’s activity-based pricing. That means we only get paid when you get active, but the only way that you get active is that you’ve gone through your whole setup process and got a new company on board. So we have a whole team standing by that will help you get on board. And we’ve got different types of teams for different parts of the organization, different accounting packages and so forth. But I would say that, so it’s not no touch, but there’s no commission sales and the lack of commission is what distorts everything.
Almería is a province in the southeastern part of Spain, and with a population of around 700,000 people it is much smaller than provinces like Madrid (6.5 million) and Barcelona recording transactions (5.5 million). As such, the region doesn’t get as much attention as the larger provinces, and so they goal of Hacklab Almería is to use technology at the “hyperlocal” level.
What I enjoyed more was the opportunity to talk with Inaury about race in Cuba. I plan to chat more about that in a blog post as well.

I love the fact that working in free software means I can make new friends in almost any country, and that even a place with limited resources can put on a great conference. If you get a chance to go to Cubaconf, you should take it. The final evening event was in a brewery, and I enjoyed the beer.
There you guys have it from David, stop listening to VCs. Look, he launched this company many, many years ago, jumped into the VC trap, raised 25 million, took some swings, missed, learned it the hard way, but really now it’s beautiful what he’s doing.
